Maintenance is an important consideration when choosing countertop materials. Porous substances such as granite or marble require routine maintenance and sealing for both food safety and aesthetic upkeep, while other surfaces, such as laminate, quartz- and solid-surfacing, require less attention.
An island should be at minimum 2 feet long in order to be useful, but ideally at least 3 feet. If you don’t have enough space to allow this, we would recommend a mobile butcher block station or a simple table if you just need a bit more prep space.
Normally, two twenty-four inch base cabinets back-to-back will accommodate most under island functions, but you should ensure that your island is not too big, with some extra space in the middle. You should make your kitchen island three feet wide because that tends to look best — but sometimes a width of two feet is the best fit. The length can be as little as four feet, but you should plan for at least seven feet if you want to accommodate a cooktop, a sink, and a dishwasher.
