Thin is inAt times, the best approach for your kitchen and island cabinets is like the optimal visiting time for those in-laws: less is more. If your kitchen is on the smaller side, a slender island and fitting kitchen cabinets may be the ideal fit. You may keep walking lanes open and have ample space for food preparation, bar storage and service with cabinets. If you leave out the countertop overhang which frequently accompanies an island, you can avoid the congestion of family or guests congregating for in-kitchen dining table.

If you’re doing a breakfast bar on the outside rather than storage, they are only one set of cabinets deep, but the bar will have 12-18 inches of overhang. Please keep in mind you’ll need to add extra space for any trim.

The single greatest disadvantage of pendant lights is the same as their greatest advantage — they hang down from the ceiling. They can get in the way, and need to be limited to areas where people won‘t be walking unless your kitchen has ceilings that are more than 8 feet high. In kitchens with tall ceilings, pendant lights can both bring the light closer to where you need it and help reduce the sense of being in the bottom of a well.

These hardwired under-counter lights are 24" long, but there are several other lengths available, from 9" up to 36". The simple design comes in white or bronze and has a curved frosted lens to provide even light distribution. Don’t worry about buying extra bulbs because this fixture’s LED bulb can last up to 50,000 hours!

Install a motion sensor that will activate a puck or LED light when the door is opened. This will help you find that pot you need, or that spice that’s hard to see in the dark cabinet. If you have recessed can lights and want an update, try recessed can converters, which are as easy as screwing in a lightbulb. This will allow you to add stylish pendants for a simple kitchen lighting makeover.

This happens when you think of it as a utilitarian detail of the room, rather than something that adds aesthetic value. When it’s done right, lighting is the unsung element that brings your design to the next level.

Adding light dimmer switches in the kitchen makes sense because bright illumination makes tasks easier, while dimmed lights help with ambiance after the meal. Adding separate kitchen lighting dimmers for each fixture will help you customize the lighting for the situation. Accent kitchen lighting gives depth and dimension to your space. For example, if you have a cabinet to store decorative glassware or a china collection, find the right type of LED light for the space.

Many people also prefer them because they seem to need less cleaning. They might be a good choice for those reasons, particularly if your kitchen is a finished room. Recessed lights, however, require enough open space above the ceiling for the housing to be fitted in. This means that the ceiling joists limit the locations where you can install a recessed light.

Adding wall sconces for kitchen lighting is a unique way to showcase what makes your kitchen light special, such as highlighting a piece of artwork. And sconces can also help with ambient light. Try low-voltage fixtures for your kitchen light wall sconces. Instead of one main kitchen light, try three identical hanging pendant fixtures over the center of the kitchen. Pendants come in a variety of styles from classic to modern, and bulbs of various wattage can be used, depending on the amount of kitchen lighting you need.
