Space is key for an island used while entertaining. The countertop must provide ample surface for serving or dining. There should also be plenty of room for guests to mingle or be seated outside the work zones. "The ability to have your family or guests seated at the island while you work on the opposite side is very comforting and social," says Debbie Nassetta, of Roomscapes, Inc., in Laguna Niguel, California.
Adding a kitchen island can seem like an impossible feat—kitchen renovations are costly, after all—but if the space is already open, a non-permanent island or cart (IKEA sells some excellent ones) can be an affordable, renovation-free way to get the added counterspace and storage.
There is no one-size-fits-all perfect kitchen island; what’s important is that you find a size and shape that works for your kitchen. If you have a large kitchen then the world is your oyster; a big island will fill an otherwise empty expanse of floor space and enables you to position your key appliances closer to each other by installing a sink or hob on your island.
