Your island will need to be placed far enough away to avoid cutting into the path between sink, stove, and fridge – otherwise known as the working triangle. This path needs to be kept free to help you work as efficiently as possible. This can make a difference in open concept main floor layouts in small homes. If your island is going to be jutting out into the sitting area, maybe an island won’t work in your space.
Kitchen islands come in various designs and sizes, so there’s a fit for every type of space, whether it’s a farmhouse kitchen or a modern one. For a kitchen lacking a lot of square footage, you can opt for a rolling kitchen island or small kitchen islands—these can add additional surface and storage space without taking up more precious space.
The island top is a smart place to specialize your kitchen work zones. For instance, butcher block is popular for islands used largely for food preparation, while marble is often a bakers top choice. You dont have to choose a single surface -- many homeowners vary the materials atop the island, by insetting a strip of butcher block, for example.
