In a neutral modern kitchen, an island is the ideal opportunity to add in a splash of statement colour. Think mustard yellow, bright blue, emerald green - the possibilities are endless! Bring the look together with matching splashes of colour around the kitchen; well-placed touches like toasters, splashbacks or vases can all be used to accessorise a statement coloured island.
Ahmann suggests making your island 3 feet wide, as that tends to look best — although sometimes a width of 2 feet is the best fit. The length can be as few as 4 feet, but he suggests planning for at least 7 feet if you need to accommodate a sink, a dishwasher and a cooktop.
Your island will need to be placed far enough away to avoid cutting into the path between sink, stove, and fridge – otherwise known as the working triangle. This path needs to be kept free to help you work as efficiently as possible. This can make a difference in open concept main floor layouts in small homes. If your island is going to be jutting out into the sitting area, maybe an island won’t work in your space.
