Most islands require a slight counter overhang to ensure diners have plenty of legroom when seated. 12 inches is the ideal rough size for an overhang, but the clearance around the island is your first priority. This means your first task should be to measure the space around your planned island, to ensure you have enough space between your island and counters to maintain open walkways. You should always leave at least 4 feet between your counters and island, even if this means having a smaller island overhang.
This mainly depends on the layout of your kitchen. If you have space for a lot of cabinetry in your kitchen, the island storage might not be your main priority. If the island is to be your main preparation area, the sink, and other kitchen appliances might have to come first, but try to make room for the cutting boards and preparation utensils near the sink.
Modern kitchen islands are exceptionally versatile and useful additions that make your life a lot easier. They are also incredibly popular and are on top of the kitchen renovation list of most homeowners. Yet, designing the perfect kitchen island takes both careful planning and proper execution. While getting it right can transform your time in the kitchen into an absolute dream, a poorly constructed kitchen island can create a whole new set of problems. The idea is to combine form and function elegantly and to create a design that suits the specific needs of your home.
