If you have an open plan space, you may also find a kitchen island useful as a natural separator between your kitchen and living/dining area. This can also be made social, as someone in the kitchen can prepare food on the island while looking out over the rest of the room.
Chopping food can be a dangerous activity if you don’t have enough light to see what you’re doing. A trio of pendant lights can be an elegant way to boost illumination over an island. It really pays off to make them dimmable if you’re eating at the island too, though. Good lighting for prep work can be painfully bright when you sit down to eat.
Do not be fooled: An island does not have to be rectangular. You can conform the shape to better suit your kitchens space and needs or just to make a dramatic focal point. Rounded, L-shape, and T-shape islands are some of the more common substitutes for rectangles.
